To think the stars were blossoming into something greater
for the both of us was wrong. I knew deep down that the affection I felt
towards her would be never returned, but yet I still chose to ignore it. Doing
so was easier on nights like this, where we would just sit on the porch, iced
tea in hand, and talk about nothing and everything. "Charlotte," I
started, smiling slightly from a name as beautiful as such that only traced the
beauty of the girl herself. "Charlotte, what do you reckon is hidden out
there? Behind the clouds, beneath the sea, out in space?" She just about
laughed, for I asked this question every night to her, and her answer was
always the same. "I don't know, Alyssa. What do you think?" I turned
to her, taking in her in all, wisdom and intelligence along with her round
green eyes hidden beneath brown curls and freckles. "Oh Char, just beauty.
Extraordinary beauty."
She pulled me up,
somehow strong being the short and round girl she was, and looked up at me.
"Come dance," and she dragged me along, to the small bridge over the
river. "Char, there's something different about you, what are you
doing?" I was completely aware that this wasn't the behaviour of her usual
self- Charlotte was a shy girl who was completely infatuated with the farm boy
down the road. But I still didn't try hard enough to figure out what was
happening. All I ever wanted was in front of me, and I wasn't the type to try
to fight it away. "Oh dear Alyssa, just dance. It's all fine. Dance with
me." And I obeyed. We swayed underneath the stars, I managing to tune out
all noises about, including the slight susurrus that grew into something
larger. Like a giant fly or mosquito coming for the blood of two girls in the
night. But I still didn't care even though it should've told me something was
up. Suddenly, the noise stopped and the land was filled with an eerie silence.
And Charlotte, oh dear Charlotte, was being dragged away by two alien things in
handcuffs. "Oh Lady Rancardin, you're under arrest for the murder of the
High Priestess, and for resisting arrest." And that was the last thing I
saw before they knocked me out.
